Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the uncontested best speech recognition software product on the market. In these rapidly changing times it does not make financial sense to type or dictate into a machine. If the doctor types it means a huge investment of time that could be radically reduced through speech recognition. If the doctor dictates into a device then someone else is paid to type the report. This is then returned back to the doctor to review and approve the chart. In both cases it likely results in a paper chart that requires significant room to store and significant time to retrieve.
Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking with an electronic medical record (like TexTALK), time and efficiency can be maximized. Charts are kept in a database type file that is easily retrieved. Once the patience’s chart appears one can review multiple charts very quickly. Outlines and templates are used to make it easy to complete the charts and standardized text can be a part of the template or added as a custom macro while the doctor is dictating. If the doctor is too rushed to do the editing it can be saved as a “Delayed Edit” and made available to the support staff to review and complete the editing. Since the dictation audio is kept with the text it is a fast, efficient means of completing the chart and storing it.
What do you need to make to Dragon NaturallySpeaking work at its best? Have a fast computer, such as a Core II or Quad Core computer with as fast of MHz as possible (hopefully over 2 GB MHz). Don’t forget the RAM, at least 4 GB of RAM. Yes, it works on slower computers but only if you have lots of patience. However, I have observed that most doctors have more patients than they have patience. So go fast, you will not regret it.
Secondly, use the Philips SpeechMike microphone. It is a hand-held microphone with a built-in trackball mouse. It allows you to stand, sit and be comfortable. Headset microphones make me feel that I am attached to my computer. I like the freedom of the hand held SpeechMike. It also provides the best accuracy I have seen. It is connected to the computer with a USB connector. The trackball mouse is handy and does not eliminate the regular computer mouse. The buttons are programmable so it is a simple toggle switch to turn the Dragon microphone on and off (this does require some simple programing – like program a VCR). Other buttons can be programmed to do other tasks like backspace, delete, go to the end of the line or the beginning of the line, page up and page down are a few possibilities.
